Difference between on-glaze and in-glaze porcelain tableware

Updated: May 10, 2022

Regarding on-glaze and in-glaze, clients often ask us the following questions: What is on-glaze color and what is in-glaze? Why in-glaze is more expensive than on-glaze? Should I choose on-glaze and in-glaze? So, this article will answer the above three questions for you, we hope it can help solve your doubts.

What is on-glaze color and in-glaze?

On-glaze is one of the main porcelain decoration methods. There are two ways of it. One is hand-painted, the other is decal paper. Hand painted is a painter painted with various colors on the glazed surface of porcelain that has been fired. Decal refers to that workers paste the decal on the glaze surface of the porcelain that has been fired. After the painting or decal are completed, the porcelain enters the kiln again and is baked at a temperature of 780-860℃.

In-glaze is a new porcelain decoration method developed in 1970. First of all, choose the color pigment without lead or with less lead. Second, the production method is the same as on-glaze. The porcelain finished by painting or decal is put into the kiln again and baked for half an hour at 1180-1200 ℃. Due to the high baking temperature, at high temperatures, the color pigment melts and penetrates into the porcelain glaze, and then when cooling, the porcelain glaze locks the color pigment.

From the above, the biggest difference between the two is that the temperature of re-entering the kiln is different. The temperature of in-glaze is higher, so the color pigment or decal melts and penetrates into the porcelain glaze. For on-glaze, the color pigment or decal appears on the porcelain glaze.

Difference between on-glaze and in-glaze

The difference between on-glaze and in-glaze is not only the firing temperature, but also the difference between other aspects. We use the following table for a more systematic and intuitive comparison.

Because the size of the color pigment particles of in-glaze is larger than that on-glaze, the firing temperature needs to be higher, which leads to lower finish rate and greater loss of in-glaze. Therefore, the price of in-glaze is about 15% -20% higher than on-glazer.

Should you choose on-glaze or in-glaze?

Choose the right type of porcelain

The process of in-glaze is to dissolve color pigment or decal into the porcelain glaze; therefore, it is necessary to choose the type of porcelain with thick glaze. The new bone china has thick glaze, so it can be used for in-glaze or on-glaze. Bone china has a thin glaze and can only be used for on-glaze.

Choose the right design

If you want to customize a simple design, such as simple lines, simple letters, the effect of the on-glaze and in-glaze is not much different, considering the cost, it is recommended to choose on-glaze with higher cost performance.

If you want to customize a complicate design, in which has many colors and the color pattern area is large, such as large area of blue, large area of red, worry about lead, cadmium, cobalt exceeding the test standard, you can choose the in-glaze.

If you want to customize a design of natural elements, such as marble, it is recommended to use in-glaze, because the effect will be more natural.

Conclusion

Based on the above three questions, in fact, on-glaze and in-glaze have their own advantages.

The touch of the in-glaze is delicate, and the price performance of the on-glaze color is higher. You can choose the appropriate one according to your purchase demand and market positioning.
